What should we do about udev? (And ubuntu)

Post-sarge we will have to talk again about udev and init scripts. Interested people should read the debian-devel thread and the one on LKML, but basically if we want udev to work reliably we need to move some functionality from the init scripts to the dev.d scripts. At this point, the choice is between making udev mandatory (the upstream author says we should do this anyway...) and writing a script to synthesize the dev.d events at boot time when a static /dev is being used.

The ubuntu preview has finally been released. I have high expectations from this distribution, because I think it has many of the qualities that Debian should have but cannot have because of its size and lack of people working full time on it.

The annoyed remarks of some developers on IRC were also really fun to read (but not surprising at all...).
